The early 1980s were a particularly special time for harder rock from Germany. Progressive rock and the so-called Krautrock were fading out, punk had to make way for new wave, and heavy metal was starting to gain momentum. Some bands, between 1980 and 1983, found themselves in a limbo and can be seen as “the missing link.” This box set contains three gems and hidden treasures that sound even more exciting today than they did back then. REQUIEM came from Stuttgart and delivered a mix of hard rock, pomp rock, and progressive rock on their only album. Guitarist Tommy Clauss later played with bands like ZAR, which also featured ex-Uriah Heep singer John Lawton. SPHINX tells a different story, as a few Italian sons of guest workers formed a band in the Stuttgart area. Their debut, “Here We Are,” was sold by the label as “Made In Italy,” which, of course, was just a marketing strategy. SPHINX were ahead of their time, delivering what would later be called progressive metal by bands like Dream Theater. Their album was re-released by another label in 1985 under the title “Burning Lights,” this time with a heavy metal-style cover artwork. LIMERICK from Saarbrücken, formed as a school band in 1980, recorded a very rare single. Their only album was released in 1983 – with German lyrics! Regionally, their strong rock with dialect in the vocals was quite successful, and they played shows with Kim Wilde and Climax Blues Band. The band is still active today and was recently featured in Rock Hard magazine.
