The album Cage Company by the Mannheim-based band CANARY was originally released in 1981 and nowadays fetches prices of 80 euros or more in good condition – if you can even find a copy. This comes as no surprise, as the blend of hard rock, krautrock, and prog appeals to several niche audiences at once.
Not much is known about CANARY, and sadly, the band’s key member, drummer Klaus Jungmann, passed away in December 2024. During the 1970s, Mannheim was a hotbed of creativity for rock music. Think of Kin Ping Meh, Twenty Sixty Six And Then, or the early Joy Fleming. CANARY carried this legacy into the early 1980s. They secured a record deal with the SriLanca label (also known as SL-Records), which was part of GAMA Musikverlag. GAMA itself had roots in the circle of the band Eulenspygel. Thus, Cage Company was recorded by Achim Bosch at Spygel Studio between December 1980 and March 1981.
Unfortunately, the newly founded SriLanca label didn’t have the budget at the time to properly promote the LP and distribute it widely in stores. As a result, Cage Company became an insider’s tip and a sought-after rarity.
Golden Core is now making this sophisticated album available again in a carefully restored and remastered edition. The booklet and LP inlay include scans/images of the original 1981 LP.
