The words of folk songs of all countries tell the same stories, often of rural life and the changing seasons, tending animals or tilling the land, tales of love and heartache, of joy and sadness, the tribulations of working in a quarry or coalmine, or on a ship in stormy seas. The melodies and refrains, and the accompanying instruments, though varied, evoke the same mix of moods and spirit. The simple, everyday experiences of humanity expressed honestly in sound, word and dance.
“FOLK SONGS FROM WALES” brings together some of Wales’ leading exponents of traditional Welsh folk song, displaying a wide variety of styles and talents – from the solo voices of Siân James and Gwenan Gibbard to the close harmony of Plethyn, steeped in the “plygain” carol tradition. Story-telling is the essence of many of the songs, and this tradition lives on in the singing of Meredydd Evans and Arfon Gwilym. . Parti’r Efail, from the Pontypridd area, continue the tradition of unaccompanied male singing while traditional groups Ar Log and Carreg Lafar arrange the songs in their own unique way. All in all, this collection provides a perfect insight into the world of Welsh traditional folk song
