As early as the late 1960s, hard rock had already emerged, and the 1970s laid the foundation with bands such as Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, UFO, Kiss, and Led Zeppelin. After the peak of punk, heavy metal proper arose in England. Young bands adopted the hard rock of the aforementioned groups and blended it with the energy and DIY attitude of the punk scene. The New Wave of British Heavy Metal, abbreviated as NWOBHM, was born and actually began as early as 1978, even though experts often regard 1979 as its starting point.
While the major labels only acted cautiously (Iron Maiden, Saxon), the “young wild ones” began pressing their own singles and LPs. The small Impulse recording studio in Newcastle shared this mindset and founded the label Neat Records for all the newcomers who recorded there. This pioneering work paid off, and just a few weeks later the label had become the most important independent company for the new, hard sounds coming out of England.
The Neat logo with its famous thumbs-up developed a cult-like fascination for later generations of metal fans, who are often willing (and required) to dig deeper into their pockets for original vinyl pressings. Following the highly successful first installment, Golden Core now presents Volume 2 of the compilation “ESSENTIAL NWOBHM – THE BEST OF NEAT RECORDS.”
In terms of bands, there are only two overlaps with Volume 1, but once again there are many surprises and rare versions of songs. The CD was compiled and remastered by Neudi, who is regarded as an expert on the NWOBHM and plays in the well-known NWOBHM tribute band ROXXCALIBUR. The booklet contains many photos and, of course, liner notes.
