MASS Back To The Music (1977)

Born in the fire of the early ‘70s rock scene, German band Mass emerged in 1973, founded by Günther V. Radny, Josef Hartl, Walter Speck, and Charles Frey. As with many great rock stories, the road was anything but smooth. After Speck’s departure, Gerd Schneider stepped in, but the band soon found themselves battling personal demons, with drug struggles threatening their future.
Enter Mick Thackeray on guitar and Johannes Eder on drums, bringing new energy to the lineup. In April 1975, Mass hit the studio in Munich to lay down tracks for an album. But fate had other plans—Hartl’s addiction spiraled out of control, the album was never released, and the tapes vanished into rock ’n’ roll legend. Eventually, both Hartl and Thackeray succumbed to their vices, leaving the band in turmoil.
But Mass refused to fade into obscurity. With the arrival of Detlef “Dave” Schreiber on vocals, the band roared back, proving their grit, resilience, and undying passion for hard rock.
Recently, Golden Core/ZYX paid tribute to Mass’s legacy, featuring tracks from Mass and Monsters on the compilation “Sound & Action – German Hardrock & Heavy Metal Rarities Vol. 1”. This renewed recognition sparked a long-overdue move—Mass’s debut album is finally available on CD and reissued on vinyl. Packaged as an exclusive bundle, this release is an absolute must-have for collectors and die-hard fans alike.
Mass never played it safe. They lived, burned, and survived—true to the spirit of rock ’n’ roll.
