And he did it again – Grammy goes to Randy Brecker!
At the 2009 Grammy Awards the Grammy for “Best contemporary jazz album” went to Randy Brecker -“Randy in Brasil.” – Congratulations! “Randy in Brasil” was produced and arranged by Ruriá Duprat at the popular Banda Sonora Studios in Brasil and features an amazing band formed around some of the best and most famous Brasilian musicians whose resumés read like a ‘who’s who’ of Brasilian stars, including Ricardo Silveira (guitar), Teco Cardoso (saxes and flute), Paulo Calazans (keyboards, Sizão Machado (bass), Robertinho Silva (drums), Da Lua and João Parahyba (percussion).
Rand in Brazil, in essence, took three years to create. It started when Randy, who has a ‘rich history’ with Brasil, went to Sao Paulo for a couple of weeks and recorded all of it live with the guys.
“We were all amazed to see how a guy like Randy, who is used to playing jazz and funk, had a lot to say in terms of the production, collaborated with us well, and was very familiar with typical Brasilian rhythms, like Samba and Bossa Nova. Actually, we think he is Brasilian, he just was born in the USA!” notes the recording’s producer, Ruriá Duprat.
