The fear of hell and salvation
Life in the Middle Ages was marked by illness. Death was everywhere. With an average life expectancy of 30 years, belief in God was the central concept of life. People have considered the earthly life to be a transition to another life. The fear of hell was large because of the sins committed. The church offered different ways to save the soul from purgatory. The exclusive right of the Church to forgive sins also resulted in abuses and grievances that ultimately triggered reforms.
