On the night of June 5-6, 1944, British and U.S. airborne troops took off for their vital destinations. Below them, into a stormy channel, an armada of warships and landing craft was emerging from ports along the coast of west and south-east England. Minesweepers swept ten channels while naval escort groups kept what submarines that ventured near, away from the packed troop transports. D-Day had arrived: Photographed by U.S. Coast Guard with additional scenes from U.S. Navy and Army Air Forces.
